GyreCraft Film Fesatival was launched in 2023 in Xiamen, a coastal city in southern China. Rooted in the local island communities, it also seeks to use moving images as a medium—and “GyreCraft” as a conceptual vessel—to foster broader place-based connections.Unlike conventional film festivals that follow a single-city event model, GyreCraft Image Week adopts a “dual-city” approach, aiming to create a diverse platform for showcasing and promoting place-based image-making. Through this model, the initiative aspires to build communities and facilitate regional exchange and collaboration among image practitioners.The 2023 edition of GyreCraft Image Week will take place in both Xiamen, China, and London, UK—two cities shaped by their unique relationships with water and vibrant waterfront communities. Drawing on distinctive visual languages and expanded thematic practices, GyreCraft will focus on the new contexts and modes of expression that emerge from the cultural circulation of images—both within specific locales and across geographic boundaries.

环流影像周于2023年在厦门发起成立，不仅立足于中国南方的海岛城市以及周边社群，也希望以影像为媒，借助“环流”，寻求更广泛的地方联系。区别于一般影展所采用的单一城市的事件模型，环流影像周将采用“双城”的影展模式，以期打造一个推广和展示地方影像的多元平台，搭建社群，并促进影像工作者之间的区域交流和合作网络。2023环流影像周将在中国厦门和英国伦敦两座城市进行，这两座城市都有着特殊的水域背景和滨水社群，也滋生出丰富的地方文化。借助独特的影像语言和议题延展，环流将聚焦影像在地方内部及跨地域间的文化流通过程中，所生成的新语境与表达。


The 2023 edition of GyreCraft Image Week focuses on a range of themes, including but not limited to:

1.Documentaries and short films that explore the conditions and transformations of local cultures, ecological environments, and traditional crafts and practices;

2.“Action-based recordings” initiated by local filmmakers, documenting regional landscapes, customs, and indigenous knowledge;

3.Interviews or video works capturing events that reflect the deep impact of local communities, migration, or contemporary modes of production on everyday life;

4.Process-based films documenting art or design projects initiated by creatives and collectives, starting from local artisanship and traditional techniques;

5.Experimental films and animations that investigate origin stories, vernacular knowledge systems, local myths, or cosmologies from individual or place-based perspectives.


环流影展 2023关注的议题包括但不限于:

1、关于地方文化、环境生态、手艺与工艺的生存状态的纪录片、短片；

2、由当地拍摄者所自发进行的有关地方风土、民俗知识的“行动记录”；

3、有关在地族群、迁徒者及现代生产对本地生活产生了深远影响事件的采访或录像；

4、从手艺人与地方技艺出发，由创意人和团队发起的艺术或设计计划的记录式影片；

5、探索个体或地方视角下有关起源故事、知识、本地神话或宇宙观的实验影像、动画。
