The program also features special exhibition units, including showcases of Chinese craft revitalization practices, the Life Magazine folk art archives, and Sino-British craft narrative exhibitions such as “Following Objectss.” It emphasizes how craft can transcend materials, cultures, and generations, becoming a powerful mechanism for community building, ecological renewal, and cultural continuity. More than just a cultural exhibition, “The Wind From Craft Town” is an institutional and cultural innovation experiment based on craft. It demonstrates how local crafts can be integrated into broader strategies of contemporary social governance, green economy, and cultural diplomacy—transforming traditional craft into a globally resonant “future cultural language.”
On May 15, 2025, with the support of the Cultural Section of the Chinese Embassy in the UK, the international craft touring program “The Wind From Craft Town: County Craftscapes” was officially launched. The event is hosted by the Beautiful China Institute of the China Academy of Art and curated by the international craft innovation organization, GyreCraft. This marks the third international touring exhibition and academic dialogue organized by the Beautiful China Institute since 2024, and is a key component of the “2025 Beautiful China Overseas Exhibition Series.”The initiative also represents GyreCraft’s continued commitment to exploring China’s county-level culture and international craft ecosystems. It follows the debut of their first China-focused international pavilion project during London Craft Week in 2024 — “Echoes of the Maritime Silk Road: A Tale of Stone.” The aim is to bring local crafts — which embody regional culture, landscape, and artisanal heritage — onto the global stage. This new program’s first systematic presentation on an international platform signifies a major step forward in sharing China’s regional cultural identity with the world. As Lu Chuan, co-founder of GyreCraft, noted, “The Wind From Craft Town: County Craftscapes” is not only a response to the World Craft Cities initiative launched by the World Crafts Council (WCC-International), but also a locally rooted practice emerging from the Chinese context. It seeks to revisit and highlight the unique role of “locality” within China’s cultural structure, and to create a cross-cultural journey grounded in local experience and mediated through craft. Centered on the core theme “What is the Wind From Craft Town?” this touring exhibition explores how local Chinese crafts can retain their cultural uniqueness while achieving innovative and contemporary expression in the face of globalization and technological transformation. The theme strongly resonates with the World Craft Cities initiative started by the World Crafts Council in 2014, which recognizes the crucial contributions of local governments, artisans, and communities to global cultural, economic, and social development — and promotes a global network bound together by craft across borders and cultures.
The wind from craft town
The Research Institute of Better China Initiative of China Academy of Art presented Local Samples: Revitalizing Chinese Craft in Place, using Song of the Earth: Chronicles of Beautiful China 2023 as a narrative thread. The project showcases five representative case studies from their nationwide research, highlighting craft practices that integrate artistry, social engagement, and sustainability. From the World Craft Atlas Initiative driven by Taoxichuan, to Natural Creation, which explores the transformation of rural crafts through contemporary design and industry integration; from reusing coffee grounds and bringing mythical “spirit beasts” of the plateau to global stages, to brand-led initiatives that support the enduring vitality of traditional craftsmanship—these cases reveal the multiple possibilities of embedding craft within ecological and social systems.
Life Magazine presents a reflection on its twenty-year journey of documenting grassroots craftsmanship across China, distilling its long-term exploration into the local narration of traditional culture, the contemporary expression of craft values, and the renewed vitality of folk art in everyday life.
From field research and craft aesthetics to editorial storytelling, the exhibition sketches a vision of “Folk Art China”—rooted in the present and extending toward the future. It reveals how folk crafts continue to grow and evolve within contemporary society, serving as a dual vessel of cultural memory and everyday aesthetics, and demonstrating their enduring relevance and redefined value today.
The UK section, Following Objects, features contemporary craft works from Farnham, Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter, and Sussex, spanning mediums such as metal, ceramics, and glass. The exhibition explores how craft creates dialogue between regional culture, material language, and bodily perception.
Emphasising the ongoing revitalisation of local knowledge within contemporary contexts, Following Objects highlights the unique power of craft as a vessel for cultural storytelling, offering global audiences a lens through which to understand the creative ecology of place-based making in contemporary Britain.
