On June 28, 2024, "Maritime Echoes · The Story of Stone" successfully opened at Guangzhou’s premier commercial landmark — Taikoo Hui. The exhibition received academic support from the Quanzhou Maritime Museum and the Key Laboratory of the Maritime Silk Road at Guangzhou University. It was curated and produced by Gyrecraft, Chizi Space x Local Landscape, with exhibition design by Regular Concept. Inspired by the concept of the Needle Atlas of Sea Routes (Haidao Zhenjing), the exhibition space was reimagined as a flowing map, aiming to revitalize and reinterpret the cultural heritage of traditional Chinese crafts and the Maritime Silk Road. Starting from a single stone, the exhibition adopts a "stone-centric" perspective to explore the cultural dimensions behind materials, craftsmanship, and local memory. It seeks to uncover the historical, cultural, artisanal, and ecological possibilities along the Maritime Silk Road—through the medium of stone—touching upon topics such as local knowledge systems, women's issues, and future sustainable living. The exhibition brought together 29 co-creators, including intangible cultural heritage inheritors, artists, designers, and local cultural institutions from southern Chinese cities such as Quanzhou, Xiamen, and Guangzhou. It features over 40 works and commissioned projects across a wide range of media, including video, photography, calligraphy, sculpture, furniture, live performance, and showcases several nationally and globally recognized intangible cultural heritage items.

"Ports, Shipbuilding, and the Sea – Maritime Stone Narratives," the themed exhibition on ports and the ocean, uses moving images to reconstruct the intricate shipbuilding techniques of ancient China. Entering the "World of Stone" section, visitors encounter the poetic elegance of Eastern stone aesthetics through architecture, exploring how the material of stone connects with urban life, history, faith, and architecture along the Maritime Silk Road. Continuing onward, the "Women: Fisherwomen Figures – Dreaming in Stone" section presents a vibrant tableau of seafaring women whose lives are full of strength and vitality. The "Intangible Heritage: Nanyin & Calligraphy" and "Intangible Heritage: Southern Puppetry" sections evoke the poetic imagination of ancient times through the melodious Nanyin and the dramatic artistry of traditional puppetry. Bridging past and future, the "Stone: Sustainable Design" section features emerging artists whose works express local interpretations of stone through the lens of sustainability. This section also highlights two nationally recognized items of intangible cultural heritage: the traditional attire of Hui’an women—specifically from the Xiao’zuo area—and a series of accessories by Mr. Wang Yongyue, a representative inheritor of the customs of Xunpu women. Additionally, it presents "Abundance of Gold and Jade," a pearl embroidery piece by Chen Keren, a provincial-level inheritor of this Fujian craft. These garments and accessories are more than the fruits of fisherwomen's diligence and wisdom—they embody a coastal aesthetic shaped by a unique lived experience, deep emotional connection to the sea and nature, and carry the cultural and historical imprint of southern Chinese women. They also reflect the distinctive spiritual essence of Minnan culture in southern China. Moreover, this section features a special presentation by Guangzhou-born sound artist mafmadmaf, who, through the project "Knowing Nanyin", explores the broader sonic landscape of Guangdong’s Di Shui Nanyin. Unlike the Fujian Nanyin, which is primarily instrumental with occasional vocals, the Guangdong form evolved from folk traditions such as muyu songs and dragon boat tunes. It integrates melodic lines with Cantonese tonal rhythms, creating a genre rich in everyday life and personal emotion—serving as a musical expression of daily experience and feeling for the Cantonese-speaking communities.
