 Over the past two years, the Institute of Beautiful China, China Academy of Art, has journeyed through the "field" alongside practitioners, witnessing the dramatic transformations triggered by modernization. Through this, it has accumulated and organized a wealth of Beautiful China art practice cases, distilled numerous actionable strategies, and woven together a nationwide Beautiful China Action Network. At the same time, the institute continues to launch forward-looking discussions and proposals for the future of Beautiful China—connecting the present with the future, here with elsewhere, and linking together multiple “intelligent alliances” to bridge action and thought. With this goal, the Institute has launched the themed book exhibition “Perceiving Action,” aiming to break the boundaries between history and the future, deepen intellectual exchange and interaction, and spark the collision of ideas. By joining forces with outstanding publishing institutions, the initiative builds a thought network matrix, observing and reflecting on changes in the new era, reorganizing strategies for Beautiful China, seeking further directions for action, and conveying its concept to the wider public. The exhibition showcases a large body of research, documentation, analysis, and design thinking around the theme of “place,” offering a comprehensive portrayal of China's construction and development—often surpassing the limits of disciplinary frameworks. Beautiful China focuses on the social landscape, grounded in the actions of individuals. The construction of Beautiful China is driven by countless people’s commitment and practice. Writing, in this context, becomes a form of action itself—writers are, in essence, practitioners. Together with publishers, editors, authors, and scholars, we have initiated a series of forums under the theme “Revisiting the Sense of Place”, aiming to more specifically, more deeply, and more focusedly share the contents of such writing with readers and the public. Through academic discussions and reflection, we hope to revisit the sense of place and lived experience, reshaping the cultural identity and self-awareness of both individuals and communities—and jointly explore the real-world challenges and values in the relationship between locality and social development.

中国美术学院美丽中国研究院经过2年多的时间，穿越实践者的“田野”，目睹现代化掀起的巨变，积累和梳理了大量“美丽中国艺术实践案例”，提炼出众多实践的行动策略，编织起全国范围的美丽中国“行动网络”；同时也在持续发起关于“美丽中国”未来提案的讨论，将当下与未来，此方与彼方互相联通，串联一个又一个的“智联体”，搭建行动和思想的链接。由此，美丽中国研究院举办了“行动感知”主题书展，希望以一次特别的书展，打破历史和未来的边界，强化思想的交流和互动，激发观念的碰撞。我们联结优秀出版机构的力量，构建起“思想网络”矩阵，观察和思考新时代带来的变化，梳理美丽中国的新思路，寻找更多实践的方向，向外界传达我们对于美丽中国的概念。此次书展展出了大量关于“地方”的资料收集、调研分析、设计思考等，非常全面地展示了中国的建设和发展，甚至超越了学科视角。美丽中国聚焦社会现场，以人成就事。美丽中国的建设是无数人的身体力行，而“书写”本身也是一种行动，书写者是某种意义上的“实践者”。我们携手出版机构、主编、作者以及相关学者共同发起以“重识‘地方感’”为主题的系列论坛，通过“研·讨”的方式，更具体、更聚焦、更有深度地向读者和大众分享“书写”的具体内容，希望能与大家一起重识地方感和经验，重塑地方文化对于个体和集体的身份意识，共同探讨地方与社会发展之间的现实问题和价值观念。

 Sense of place refers to the relationship between people, space, and place. “Space” and “place” are foundational elements of our living world. When a space is bounded and endowed with human emotion, it becomes a “place.” Areas such as homes, offices, or tourist destinations may lack clear boundaries, yet each already functions as a place. When people develop deeper emotional connections with their environments, the inherent characteristics of these “places” become more apparent. Sociologist Fei Xiaotong once described China as a grassroots, rural-based society. This rural nature fosters a culture of familiarity, a society without strangers. Familiarity over time cultivates emotional attachment, identification, and a sense of belonging—what we call “sense of place.” This sense can expand from one's residence to the broader region shaped by many such places. Understanding “sense of place” helps guide human-centered spatial planning, translating abstract perception into tangible indicators—enabling people to experience a distinctive feeling of space.

地方感涵盖了人、空间、地方之间的关系。其中，“空间、地方”是我们生活世界的基础组成部分。当我们生活在空间之中，“空间”被限定范围并被赋予人类感情后就成为“地方”。由家、办公室、旅游胜地所构成的区域尽管缺乏明确的边界，但其本身已然成为一个地方。当人们与所在的“地方”有更加密切的情感联系后，“地方”本身所固有的特征也会更加显见。费孝通先生称中国从基层上看是乡土性的社会。乡土性形成的特点是一种“熟悉”社会，没有陌生人的社会。“熟悉”推动着人在一定时间内形成对“地方”的依附、认同和归属感，而这种特殊情感的生成，便正是所谓的“地方感”。“地方感”是可以从个人的居住地扩大到由众多居住地所限定的区域。其中，对“地方感”的认知指导我们对环境进行具有人文精神的空间规划。将抽象的感知具体化、指标化，使主体人感知到异于其他空间的特殊感受。

Fin Lei｜Art and publishing curator; co-initiator of Mr. Po, Local Gazetteer Novels, and the Institute for Complex Issues. He has curated Documentary Week (Hangzhou), Guy Debord Film Week (Hangzhou), the “Gu Shen Bian” series at the Shanghai Biennale City Project, and multiple Sino-French poetry and performance events including To the God of Sleep and Scattered Dreams.

Guest Speakers
Long Yitang｜Curator and writer focused on self-organized initiatives and on-site curating. He co-founded the AXIS Art Project and 404 Not Found Lab, and has been deeply involved in Local Gazetteer Novels, curating exhibitions, residencies, and community-based projects.

Yan You｜Founder of Fake Magazine, and curator of numerous photobook and art book fairs, including the Beijing Photo Biennale Book Fair, Lianzhou Photobook Fair, and Unfold Art Book Fair (Shanghai). His curated books have been shortlisted for international awards such as Aperture–Paris Photo, Kassel, and Arles, and he has served as a juror for various photobook festivals in Asia.

Yang Yunchang｜Ph.D. in Anthropology and Visual Culture, Assistant Professor at the Department of Sociology, Peking University, and co-editor of Photography and Culture. His research focuses on art and visual anthropology, Chinese contemporary visual culture, and explores themes such as “amateurism” and the “ethnographic turn” in photography and contemporary art.

Chen Baiqi｜Curator and writer, currently a Ph.D. candidate in Architectural Anthropology at the Royal College of Art, UK. He has worked with institutions including the Hong Kong Arts Festival, the Art Institute of Chicago, and OCAT. He is co-founder of the Guan Chao Film Festival, which promotes Chaozhou cinema and continues to operate between London, Shenzhen, and his hometown.

言由｜假杂志创办人，策划多个摄影/艺术书展，包括北京摄影双年展、连州摄影书展、Unfold艺术书展等，书籍多次入围Aperture、Kassel、Arles等国际奖项，并担任多个摄影节评委。

杨云鬯｜人类学与视觉文化博士，北京大学社会学系助理教授。研究聚焦艺术与视觉人类学、中国当代视觉文化及摄影史中的“业余主义”和“民族志转向”。

陈柏麒｜策展人、写作者，现为英国皇家艺术学院建筑人类学博士候选人。曾任职于香港艺术节、芝加哥美术馆、OCAT等机构，并联合创办“观潮影展”，推广潮汕地区影像实践。

Lu Chuan｜Independent curator and writer based in London. Co-initiated the AXIS Art Project (Xiamen) and Circulation Film Festival (Xiamen, London). Former curator at Troy House Art Foundation and Jidian Contemporary Art Center. Her curatorial projects have been shown at Times Museum (Guangzhou), Power Station of Art (Shanghai), and Jimei x Arles Photo Festival, among others. Her writings appear in ARTFORUM, OCULA, TANC, Art-Ba-Ba, Art Collection+, and KINFOLK.

Chen Baiqi｜Curator and writer, currently a Ph.D. candidate in Architectural Anthropology at the Royal College of Art, UK. He has worked with institutions including the Hong Kong Arts Festival, the Art Institute of Chicago, and OCAT. He is co-founder of the Guan Chao Film Festival, which promotes Chaozhou cinema and continues to operate between London, Shenzhen, and his hometown.

Zeng Yunhui｜Founder of Grand Canyon Film Studio and initiator of M.T. Youth Film Festival (2010–2015). He has curated experimental video forums and co-founded the Xiamen Film Forum during the Golden Rooster and Hundred Flowers Film Festival. He directed Born Beneath the Earth and the documentary Spirit of the Himalayas (2023).

Du Chenyen｜Trained in landscape installation and public art, Du was former director of Jidian Contemporary Art Center. She is currently the Artistic Director of Dunhuang Culture & Tourism Group and founder of Gravity Art Space in Shanghai, working across exhibition planning and cultural management.

Yang Hui｜Documentary filmmaker and local history researcher. His work explores memory through moving image, focusing on vernacular narratives. Key projects include No. 6 Bijia Mountain, The Bihu Plan, and The People of the Waters.

杜晨艳｜景观装置与公共艺术背景，曾任几点当代艺术中心执行馆长，现为敦煌文旅集团艺术总监、引力艺术空间创始人，活跃于艺术与文化管理一线。


杨晖｜纪录片创作者、地方文史研究者，长期通过影像讲述地方记忆，代表作品包括《笔架山6号》《水居之民》等，关注民间历史与文化叙述。
