伦敦)

The Quanzhou Pavilion of China at London Craft Week 2024 and its international touring programme began in Quanzhou—a UNESCO World Heritage city and a historic point of departure on the Maritime Silk Road. Taking a stone as its point of departure, the project traced the local knowledge embedded in material, skill, and memory.Following routes between ocean and place, it explored craft traditions, fisherwomen's culture, and the intertwined histories they continue to carry. Bringing together twenty-one practitioners from art, craft, film, and design, the exhibition presented twenty-eight works, including eight newly commissioned projects. The tour opened in Guangzhou, another historic point of departure on the Maritime Silk Road.

002 The Wind from Craft Town
县域风物 (2024–present)

V&A Museum, London / China and the UK

The Wind from Craft Town is a long-term initiative working through exhibitions, forums, residencies and brand collaborations, alongside a sustained study of the ecologies of craft cities and craft towns worldwide. The project offers an alternative vantage point: development need not be measured by scale. In an era of glocalisation, small-scale action reveals its own distinct value, sustaining cultural spaces attentive to the fine-grained relationships between people and making — so that tradition is no longer consigned to the past, but participates, in a state of continual change, in present production and future imagination.

Partners include Sussex, Farnham (England's first World Craft City) and Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter in the UK; partners in Switzerland and Hong Kong; the Chinese craft cities of Jingdezhen, Liling, Dehua and Jizhou; and Nature Creation, NazeNaze, the V&A Museum, ROSA Magazine and LIFE Magazine

Taking the two cities’ relationships with water and their waterfront communities as a starting point, the programme explored how place-based moving-image practices can circulate across geographies, creating new contexts, exchanges and connections. Since then, GyreCraft has continued to develop moving-image projects at different scales, using the medium as a way to understand place, document individual experiences and build connections across regions.
